Change your email destination with cPanel Shared Hosting

cPanel offers an email service that's hosted locally on your cPanel account. If you want to use a different email service, we offer a simple tool to help you route your email using your domain name's MX records, which control the server that receives email sent to your domain.

Using this tool, you'll add MX records from your email provider, let them propagate across the Internet, and then remove the existing MX records. During the propagation time, email could be delivered to either your cPanel shared hosting account or your email provider.

Note: Before changing your email destination (i.e. your domain name's MX records), set up your email address on the new service and make sure you have the MX records you need to use.

Change your cPanel's email destination

  1. Log in to your ITEGY account.
  2. Click Web Hosting.
  3. Next to the account you want to use, click Manage.
  4. In the Domains section, click Zone Editor.
  5. Select Manage under the Actions column for the domain name whose email destination you want to change.
  6. Click Add Record, enter the information from your email provider, and click Add Record.

Note: To prevent possible issues with your email service, start with Priority 10 instead of 0 for the MX records that you add.

At this point, we recommend waiting up to 48 hours for the changes to your domain name's email settings to propagate across the Internet. However, if your email isn't currently working or you don't mind downtime, you can proceed.

Finalize your changes

  1. In the Email section of your cPanel account, click Email Routing.
  2. Select the domain that you want to change from the Domain drop-down menu.
  3. Select Remote Mail Exchanger, and then click Change.
  4. Click Zone Editor in the Note at the top of the page.
  5. Select Manage under the Actions column for the domain name that you want to change.
  6. In the Zone Records section, next to the Priority 0 MX record with the Destination that is your domain name, click Delete.
  7. Click Continue.

While this change propagates, email sent to your domain name may be delivered to the email address on your cPanel shared hosting account.
