How to FTP to Your Server

With an FTP (or File Transfer Protocol) program, you can connect to a remote server or computer to create folders or transfer, move and rename files.

Popular FTP clients include:

FileZilla
Fetch (Mac)
gFTP(Linux)

You can also create a network connection to your website if you have Windows XP. See Using Windows XP Network Places to Upload Your Website for a video tutorial.

Note: Every control panel includes an FTP (sometimes labeled Manage Files) option that you can use to rename files or perform simple maintenance. An FTP program is a better option for large or multiple file transfers.

After you download and install an FTP client, configure it to connect to your server. You need the following information:

Host Name — The IP address or domain name for your hosting account.

FTP User Name — The user name for your hosting account.

FTP Password — The password for your hosting account.

Note: Depending on your server configuration, you might need additional information, such as start directory or port. If you did not configure your server to require those settings, leave them as the default.
